Understanding Your Animal Spirit Totems
Everyone
has spirit animal associations that help us to understand ourselves and our path in life. There are 9 animals in our totem
tree. Understanding each of your totems helps you to understand how and why you are the way you are, react the way you do
and how you interact with others. For instance, in a relationship, two Bull totems butt heads a great deal.
Humans associate with animals. We take on animal characteristics and use animals to
describe good and bad qualities:
He’s
a bulldog – for someone who gets things done
He’s
a chicken – for a coward
She’s a fox – for
a pretty lady
We feel a kinship with animals and
they can feel like our children. We hurt when they hurt. But we can find strength through their strength as well.
Animals teach us many things
Never take more than you need;
Thank
the Creator for what you have and will receive;
Use all
of what you have;
Give away what you do not need.
Walt Whitman once said in a poem “Song of Myself” – I’m
paraphrasing
[Animals] do not
sweat and whine about their condition. They do not lie awake in the dark and weep for their sins, Not one is dissatisfied, not
one is demented with the mania of owning things
Everything
on earth has purpose; - this includes you. Everything on earth is connected; - each of us is connected with on another.
Understanding Animal Totem Spirits – What exactly are
the totems?
The Male totem animal
– sits to your right. This is the face you show the world. Your game face, the warrior side. How you face conflict and
adversity, how you meet your challenges and your goals.
The Female
totem animal – sits to your left. This is your true face, the face you show your family and friends – the good
and the bad.
The Spirit totem animal – sits above
you. Spirit balances the male and the female and helps guide you through life.
The
Messenger totem animal – comes into your life when there are messages you need to listen to.
The Journey totem animal – comes into your life when you are embarking
on a new quest, whether spiritual or mundane.
The Four other
totem animals deal with other aspects of your life and sometimes will be replaced if needed. These are not permanent totems,
but you always have a spirit animal to help you through the following areas:
Finance
Romance
Health
Wisdom
FINDING YOUR ANIMAL TOTEM
You do not choose an animal guide as your personal
spirit guide.
You
don’t pick animal spirits based on how cute they are. Some of the most powerful animal
spirits are not the pretty ones.A boar is a very powerful spirit guide.
Understanding your animal spirits are is a process
of paying attention to the spirits around you and following the signs.
CONNECTING WITH YOUR TOTEMS
Some psychologists say that a vision or message from an animal spirit guide may be certain aspects of the human
psyche resurfacing from the pre-conscious ancient human mind.
·For example, fish living in the sea are associated with the unconscious mind and symbolize a deep mind.
Another example, by meditating on the various qualities of reptiles and their
mythical associations, it may be possible to access the reptilian aspects of the mind that correspond to the limbic system
in the brain, which deals with sensory impressions, pleasure and pain.
·Likewise, by meditating on various mammals, a path is opened to the mammalian aspects of the human psychic
corresponding to the thalamus and the hypothalamus in the brain associated with the emotions, a sense of community, and instinctual
wisdom.
You can draw strength from your animal totem.Understanding animals themselves can make you a better person.Animals do not hate nor experience
greed or envy. They don’t declare war on one another.
MEETING YOUR ANIMAL GUIDE
Sit down in a quiet place alone. Make certain there will be no distractions or interruptions.
Draw a circle around you and bless the circle with sage, cedar, sweet grass, tobacco or some other sacred medicine.
Begin your journey into the spirit world with prayer and continue with deep meditation.
Get comfortable. Take a deep breath. Inhale, exhale deeply several times.
Release your ego, desires and expectations of what may follow. Chase away all shadows of fear and negativity.
Begin to dream of some idyllic place like a forest trail, bubbling mountain stream, or flower covered glen. Move
about in this world seeing, smelling and feeling everything. After awhile, you will hear something and you will
see a creature slowly coming to you.
The creature is friendly
and invites your touch. You embrace. This is your animal spirit guide. Spend time talking with your
animal guide now. We think and speak differently than animals. So messages from our
animal spirit guides can be confusing at first until we are in tune with how they communicate with us.
Be open to any and all types of messages. Do not get trapped by wishing for
a certain messages. Clear your mind completely. Open your heart to its love and lessons. When your time is finished,
thank all the beings in this special place and your animal guide who has chosen to teach you. Slowly return by the way
you came into full consciousness. Open your eyes.
OTHER SUGGESTIONS
Some
people help themselves connect by wearing jewelry to symbolize their animal totem or use decorations in their home to honor
the animal.
